Myrtles Plantation

The Myrtles Plantation had been built in 1796 by General David Bradford and also at enough time had been called Laurel Grove. He existed indeed there together with partner and five children until his death in 1808 when their child Sara and her spouse Judge Clark Woodruff took over management of the plantation on her behalf mommy.

In 1823 Sarah died from yellow-fever followed in 1824 by two of the woman three kiddies James and Cornelia Gale. Clark stayed on to manage the plantation with his mother-in-law until 1830 whenever she died. After the woman death Clark took their only remaining kid, Mary Octavia and moved to Covington, Lousiana. He marketed the plantation in 1834 to Ruffin Gray Stirling along with his spouse Mary.

The Sterlings performed considerable restorations in the plantation, almost doubling it in proportions. Additionally they changed title from Laurel Grove to Myrtles due to the reported hauntings which were already connected with Laurel Grove. No cost was spared in renovations and lots of things had been put into keep the undesired spirits out including cherubs and crosses etched inside cup of primary entrances to your house. That they had 9 children within house but just 4 of those managed to get to adulthood. Ruffin died in 1854 and left the plantation to his spouse.

In 1865 Mary turned-over handling of the plantation to the woman girl Sarah along with her spouse William Drew Winter. Collectively they’d 6 young ones during the plantation with one, Kate, dying on chronilogical age of 3 of typhoid. Rumor has it that in their desprate need certainly to conserve their child, they called in a voodoo priestess to save lots of their particular daugther. They offered the plantation due to installing debts in 1868 but had the ability to get it in 1870.

In 1871 William Winters was called outside by an unknown caller and chance in the verandah. Relating to record, he died at that moment but relating to others, he managed to make it inside residence or more to the 17th step associated with primary foyer before dying in the partner’s arms. Mary remained supervisor associated with the plantation until her demise in 1880 when she offered the ownership to the woman son Stephen. By 1886 although plantation ended up being heavily with debt and ended up being sold.

It had many owners before it was eventually turned into a sleep & morning meal in 1980’s.

The house is well regarded as "The Many Haunted House in America" as a result of the range supposed murders to occur in the house. But just one murder is on record as reality and not fiction. The rest tend to be up for discussion.

In 1573 the colonial management offered the roomy grounds of this old religious Conceptionists calpulli prehispanic Moyotlan (later district of San Juan) to determine a convent.

The inspiration, focused on the Queen of Heaven translation for the Latin Regina Coeli while the Nativity regarding the Virgin Mary, was approved by Pope Gregory XIII in 1578.

The temple associated with the monastery had been built in the position created by the current streets of Bolívar and Regina, when compared with free-space in the seventeenth century and had been known called Piazza Regina Chiquita. Its unusual shape started in the stroke of 1 of the canals running through this wasteland. The convent while the primitive church had been very poor, poor foundation.

The restructuring of those structures was done in 1656 at the expense of Melchor de Terreros. The temple ended up being later on reformed and opened on September 13, 1731. The task had been created by the architect Miguel Custodio Durán and funded the Archbishop Jose Lanciego and Eguilaz.

As with any the squares and streets associated with the colonial city prior to the management of Viceroy Revillagigedo, Plaza Regina would not escape the dirt and neglect that have been outdoors areas of this metropolis: not enough appropriate drainage, ponding constant, no paving and pavements and not enough evening illumination, which became a dangerous spot at night. Additionally, she frequently settled swap suits and tablados of most types, having already been used, even to killing animals, blending each one of these discomforts the spectacle of beggars and needy that aposentaban there for spiritual features.

Square underwent radical transformation whenever exclaustradas the Franciscan nuns, together with those of other religious orders, the March 8, 1863, and even though these gone back to the monastery during the reign of Maximilian of Hapsburg, 14 November 1867 provided the convent on Secretary of War, providing as headquarters until June 15, 1871, whenever federal government regarding the Republic gave it in payment of debts, the rich Ramón Obregón.

The chapel, at the same time, remained available for worship. A study given by the ruler associated with sector in 1868, tends to make reference to the work undertaken to fade away unhealthiness and middens gathered within the square, in which there was clearly currently a public source guarded the city authorities, insisting he swept and watered everyday "by the watermen which attend Regina source to-draw water" and for litter cardboard boxes, coal, or other dealership zacateros for this kind, asearan reside the place using their product. Moreover, in February of the year, tin lanterns had been set up with liquid gas appliances, turpentine, twenty lights, changing oil lights put in by the colonial administration.

Thanks to the generosity and philanthropy of skip Maria Conception tall Beistegui and Garcia, who at his death in 1873, transferred its possessions towards first step toward a hospital with what ended up being after the Convent of Regina, had been saved from destruction, that had begun fleetingly before, the key cloister as well as the bays right beside it. So-called Beistegui Conception Hospital, after laborious adaptation, was inaugurated by General Porfirio Diaz on March 21, 1886.

All of those other convent had been divided in to lots, built several houses in place and local architectural pointless. In 1967, the authorities associated with the Federal District, into need for available spaces in this area of the town, elected Regina Square as one of the first in the repair of civic facilities into the money.

Then square ended up being shut to traffic regarding the stretch of Regina Street that went opposite the temple, only allowing it to flow down the side road simply north of square, carrying the stone pavement in San Luis Potosi cobble within the facade of the temple it self. Current woods were relocated to your north of square to permit greater visibility into the building.

Eric’s Star Twist V.2.1 – (fairly easy) Precrease
correct credit errors
sorry for the big picture.. click ‘all sizes’ button please.

i can’t wait any more to thank my ‘first’ teacher of paper tessellation in flickr, origomi, Eric Gjerde.
well.. since i couldn’t post photos for a while so i’ve prepared this.
i had something else about this model but i’m not sure if i will post that something.
i will tell what the something is if i post it (wish me luck).

anyway, this and the original model gives me great inspiration on paper folding…
in fact i’ve fold the both quite alot for the kids of my friends’.
what can i say, they just love them. and i got the credit for it (sorry Eric).
one of my friend laminated this nicely.
umm… not quite like Eric’s vacuum-packed star twist.. ^L^"

before making this precrease and steps for star twist, i looked over Eric’s homepage to see if there’s any change on this model… (hoping there’s a new hint on folding this)
and i found New Star Twist Diagrams which is nice but not so easy to remember… at least to me. so i decide to make a ‘fairly easy’ folding steps for the beginners like me.

this is also my ‘first’ attempt to make an SCP(Sequenced Crease Pattern),
so it needs to be examined by experts such as.. Philip? and other gurus?
please tell me what you guys think.. i don’t want to be alone (like Joel had been ^L^")

i found some mistakes after uploading them… see the notes on diagram.
and if you have any questions or sugestions, please let me know.
(i’m sure some of you couldn’t understand my ‘Kongrish(Korean-English)’. ^L^")

again, i thank Eric and of course other friends in flickr ^L^"

[last thing to say… i open these for friends only right now.. i will open them to public if Eric or you guys think that i’m not breaking any kind of copyright thing such as my copy of Philip’s (CC) mark ^L^"]

… [Edited: i open this to public with Eric’s permission. well i might wait till Philip says something about his CC mark that i copied but i guess he’s a lil busy ^L^".
by the way, i’m gonna send PDF of this to Eric about a week later (i gotta correct some mistakes and add more explanation on them)
so that he can post it on his homepage.
i might post it on my homepage (or weblog page) when i have one available…
probably a Korean Version… ^L^"

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Lockheed P-38J-10-LO Lightning :

In the P-38 Lockheed engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson and his team of designers created one of the most successful twin-engine fighters ever flown by any nation. From 1942 to 1945, U. S. Army Air Forces pilots flew P-38s over Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, and from the frozen Aleutian Islands to the sun-baked deserts of North Africa. Lightning pilots in the Pacific theater downed more Japanese aircraft than pilots flying any other Allied warplane.

Maj. Richard I. Bong, America’s leading fighter ace, flew this P-38J-10-LO on April 16, 1945, at Wright Field, Ohio, to evaluate an experimental method of interconnecting the movement of the throttle and propeller control levers. However, his right engine exploded in flight before he could conduct the experiment.

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Vought OS2U-3 Kingfisher:

The Kingfisher was the U.S. Navy’s primary ship-based, scout and observation aircraft during World War II. Revolutionary spot welding techniques gave it a smooth, non-buckling fuselage structure. Deflector plate flaps that hung from the wing’s trailing edge and spoiler-augmented ailerons functioned like extra flaps to allow slower landing speeds. Most OS2Us operated in the Pacific, where they rescued many downed airmen, including World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker and the crew of his B-17 Flying Fortress.

In March 1942, this airplane was assigned to the battleship USS Indiana. It later underwent a six-month overhaul in California, returned to Pearl Harbor, and rejoined the Indiana in March 1944. Editor’s note: Happy Valentine’s Day, Flickr friends! This pretty-in-pink image of Orion is from the 2007 archives.

At a distance of about 1,500 light years, the Orion Nebula is one of the closest star formation regions to Earth. This makes Orion — a favorite for amateur astronomers and casual sky watchers — an excellent location to study how stars are born and behave during their stellar childhoods. In this composite image, the central region of Orion is seen as never before through NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope.

The bright point-like sources (blue and orange) in this image are the newly formed stars captured in X-ray light by a long series of Chandra observations. These nearly continuous observations, lasting almost 13 days, allowed astronomers to monitor the activity of Sun-like stars between 1 and 10 million years old. The fledgling stars were seen to flare in their X-ray intensity much more than our Sun does today. This suggests our Sun had many violent and energetic outbursts when it was much younger. The wispy filaments (pink and purple) are clouds of gas and dust as seen by Hubble in optical light. This gas and dust will one day condense into disks of material from which future generations of stars will be born.

NASA Airborne Campaigns Focus on Climate Impacts in the Arctic

This red plane is a DHC-3 Otter, the plane flown in NASA’s Operation IceBridge-Alaska surveys of mountain glaciers in Alaska.

Credit: Chris Larsen, University of Alaska-Fairbanks

Over the past few decades, average global temperatures have been on the rise, and this warming is happening two to three times faster in the Arctic. As the region’s summer comes to a close, NASA is hard at work studying how rising temperatures are affecting the Arctic.

NASA researchers this summer and fall are carrying out three Alaska-based airborne research campaigns aimed at measuring greenhouse gas concentrations near Earth’s surface, monitoring Alaskan glaciers, and collecting data on Arctic sea ice and clouds. Observations from these NASA campaigns will give researchers a better understanding of how the Arctic is responding to rising temperatures.

The Arctic Radiation – IceBridge Sea and Ice Experiment, or ARISE, is a new NASA airborne campaign to collect data on thinning sea ice and measure cloud and atmospheric properties in the Arctic. The campaign was designed to address questions about the relationship between retreating sea ice and the Arctic climate.

Arctic sea ice reflects sunlight away from Earth, moderating warming in the region. Loss of sea ice means more heat from the sun is absorbed by the ocean surface, adding to Arctic warming. In addition, the larger amount of open water leads to more moisture in the air, which affects the formation of clouds that have their own effect on warming, either enhancing or reducing it. This trick that the planet is looking back at you is actually a Hubble treat: An eerie, close-up view of Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system. Hubble was monitoring changes in Jupiter’s immense Great Red Spot (GRS) storm on April 21, 2014, when the shadow of the Jovian moon, Ganymede, swept across the center of the storm. This gave the giant planet the uncanny appearance of having a pupil in the center of a 10,000 mile-diameter “eye.” For a moment, Jupiter “stared” back at Hubble like a one-eyed giant Cyclops.

John Wright Stanly House

While Visiting the historic city of New Bern, in coastal North Carolina, I saw many interesting sites, including Tryon Palace, capitol of the independent State of North Carolina after the Revolutionary War, and Bradham Drug Company, the birthplace of Pepsi Cola. But to me, the most fascinating of all was the John Wright Stanly House. It was here that I learned the story of John Carruthers Stanly, a former slave who gained his freedom, only to become the largest slaveholder in Craven County, North Carolina.

Stanly, born a slave in 1774, was the son of an African Ibo woman and the white prominent merchant-shipper John Wright Stanly. He was apprenticed to Alexander and Lydia Stewart, close friends and neighbors of his father. They saw to it that John received an education and learned the trade of barbering. At an early age, they helped him establish his own barbershop in New Bern. Many of the town’s farmers and planters frequented his barbershop for a shave or a trim. As a result, Stanly developed a successful business. By the time he reached the age of twenty-one, literate and economically able to provide for himself, his owners petitioned the Craven County court in 1795 for his emancipation. However, he was not completely satisfied with the ruling of the court and in 1798, through a special act, the state legislature confirmed the emancipation of John Carruthers Stanly, which entitled him to all rights and privileges of a free person.

Between 1800 and 1801, Stanly purchased his slave wife, Kitty, and two mulatto slave children. By March 1805, they were emancipated by the Craven County Superior Court. A few days later, Kitty and Stanly were legally married in New Bern and posted a legal marriage bond in Raleigh. Stanly’s wife was the daughter of Richard and Mary Green and the paternal granddaughter of Amelia Green. Two years later, in 1807, Stanly was successful in getting the court to emancipate his wife’s brother.

Some politically correct Court Historians end the story here, if they acknowledge the existence of black slaveholders at all. What a noble thing, to purchase and emancipate one’s own family! But there is much more to the story.

After securing his own and his family’s freedom, Stanly began to focus more on business matters. He obtained other slaves to work for him. Two of them, Boston and Brister, were taught the barbering trade. Once they became skillful barbers, Stanly let them run the operation while he used the money they helped him earn to invest in additional town property, farmland, and more slaves.

Through his business acumen, Stanley eventually became a very wealthy plantation owner and the largest slaveholder in all of Craven County. He profited from investments in real estate, rental properties, the slave operated barbershop, and plantations from which he sold commodities such as cotton and turpentine.

Stanly’s plantations and rental properties were operated by skilled slaves along with help from some hired free blacks. To improve his rental properties in New Bern, he used skilled slaves and free blacks to build cabins and other residences and to repair and renovate these properties. During the depression of the early 1820s it was slave labor that kept Stanly economically stable.

The 1830 census reveals that Stanly owned, 163 slaves. He has been described as a harsh, profit-minded task master whose treatment of his slaves was no different than the treatment slaves received from white owners. Stanly’s goal, shared by white southern planters, was on expanding his operations and increasing his profits.

During the early 1820s, Stanly’s wife, Kitty, was taken seriously ill. She became bedridden and, despite careful attention by two slave nurses, she died around 1824. It was at this same time that Stanly began to face a series of financial difficulties. His fortune began to plummet when the Bank of New Bern, due to the national bank tightening controls of some state and local banks, was forced to collect all outstanding debts. Unfortunately, Stanly had countersigned a security note for John Stanly, his white half-brother, in the amount of ,962. Stanly was forced to assume the debt. This, along with his own debts forced him to refinance his mortgages and sell large pieces of property, including slaves. When these options did not resolve his economic woes, he resorted to mortgaging his turpentine, cotton, and corn crops, as well as selling his barbershop, which had been operating continuously for forty years. Without a steady flow of income, his fortunes continued to decline. In 1843, his last 160 acres of land were sold at public auction. Three years later, at the age of 74, John Carruthers Stanly died. At the time of his death he still owned seven slaves.

We paid off our last credit card!

On May 1st, 2011 my wife and I paid off our last credit card. It took us 17 months to knock out over ,000 of credit card debt we accumulated over the last several years. We could have paid it off sooner but we received a vacation to Hawaii (air-fair and hotel) for our 20th wedding anniversary and spent a little over ,000 cash on this trip. It was well worth the delay!

We read Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover” in December of 2009 and committed to that method in January of 2010. Whether you’re a fan of Dave Ramsey or not his method works, and we are proof of it. It just takes a lot of discipline, and if you’re a couple, you have to be on the same page.

Our next goal is to pay off our SUV, which we hope to do in less than a year. And we just refinanced our house to a 15 year mortgage and our goal is to make an extra payment per year to pay it off even sooner.

All financial goals are possible through budgeting!
